Time on Her Hands
Photograph by Catherine Karnow

Not one to twiddle her thumbs, Shirley Godwin crochets during the one to two minutes it takes miners to load and unload the 240-ton (217-metric-ton) truck she drives for Hibbing Taconite Company. “I can make a pair of booties in a shift and an afghan in a month,” says Godwin, who has worked for the company for 28 years, including 13 as a driver. Depending on the location of the digging, Godwin makes between 10 and 30 runs a day. If she needs a break from crocheting, she has another hobby to fall back on. “I’m also a woodworker,” she says, “so sometimes I sand while I’m waiting.”
