Once ranked as one of Britain's most illustrious explorers, Vischer made a more lasting mark as an educator. The innovative curriculum he devised for schools in northern Nigeria—one sensitive to local culture—helped propel him to a high position in the British government, for which he was awarded a knighthood. Vischer also showed a sure hand as a photographer for his desert expedition and as painter of village scenes, above.
