As images of an encrusted torpedo tube flickered across video monitors aboard the Grayscout, Ballard and his team believed they'd found their quarry: the remains of PT 109. They had pinpointed their search area by studying historic accounts of the sinking and plotting the course of the floating wreckage. A few weeks after this torpedo tube was found, the team showed the video images to U.S. Navy scholars, who identified it as the type on Kennedy's ship. In keeping with Navy policy, the wreck site will not be disturbed. |
