Bustle and Hustle Photograph by Steve McCurry
Kabul's crowded market streets ring with the clatter of commerce as optimism—and opportunism—fuel a revival unimaginable only a year ago. Goods imported from Pakistan, the Persian Gulf countries, and elsewhere—ranging from refrigerators and tires to the latest CDs—cram bazaar stalls, though often with price tags beyond the reach of Kabul residents and returning refugees. Many of those refugees transplant their ready-made tailor shops, bakeries, and other businesses straight from the Pakistani or Iranian camps where they had fled to escape conflict and repression in Afghanistan. |
