Crash Course
Photograph by Larry Nighswander

Lisa Lauck had no idea what was in store one day last January when she walked into her photography class at Ohio University's Visual Communication school. Professor Larry Nighswander said "Here's your film, you've got great light, go for it," recalls Lauck, who hit the streets of Athens, Ohio, to document the day. This was in effect a repeat of the Dawn to Dusk shoot of zip code 45701 that she and other VisCom students had done the previous October. That day had been "crappy"—freezing and overcast. But this one was unseasonably warm, so Lauck headed for the "bizarro intersection" where townies and students cross paths. "I've never seen a crosswalk in my life that goes diagonally," says Lauck. "That intersection says a lot about Athens."
