"When several people told me of kayakers giving food treats to wolves on Vargas Island (including the two above), the news gave me pause," says author Doug Chadwick. "I come from Montana grizzly country, where the line between causing carnivores to lose their fear of people and conditioning them to cause trouble is pretty thin." Chadwick managed to keep three of the aggressive panhandlers at bay with a stout club. A 23-year-old University of Victoria student wasn't so lucky. One wolf attacked the man in his sleeping bag, inflicting a head wound that required 50 stitches. Two wolves on the island were destroyed as a result. |
