Welcome Respite
Photograph by Joel Sartore

Members of the Kelsemaht Band of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation gather for a salmon barbecue on Vargas Island—part of a two-week-long voyage by dugout canoe to visit the Squamish Nation near Vancouver. Murray John, Jr., right, wears the chief's cape while his warriors don cedar headbands. Such voyages are rekindling the rich maritime heritage of the Nuu-chah-nulth.
