Stone symbols of Catholic faith rise from a cemetery in the town of Jayuya in Puerto Rico's central highlands. Some 85 percent of Puerto Ricans practice Catholicism, which arrived on the island with the Spanish more than 400 years ago. Beliefs have blended over the centuries. Today, in some regions, the faithful incorporate African and native Taíno traditions into their religious practicea legacy of those once enslaved here. |
