Beating the heat, sisters Yanalleismarys, in white, and Karla Arroyo splash in the backyard pool at their home in Corozal in the central mountains. Though famous for its beaches, Puerto Rico is largely mountainous, with some peaks topping 3,400 feet (1,000 meters). High altitude doesn't spare Corozal from searing summer heat. "At night," says mom Marilyn Arroyo, "we drag a mattress out to the back yard to stay cool." |
