The Old Man and the Sea

He calls himself simply "Piloto," or Pilot, and he told photographer Amy Toensing that he's not sure of his exact age. But he does know this: He's fished from the same beach in Aguadilla, in northwestern Puerto Rico, for more than 60 years. How much longer can he—or anyone—fish here? Puerto Rico's commercial fishing industry is running dry. A recent report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration stated that 23 of 31 coral-reef stocks in the U.S. Caribbean are overfished. The reefs are further stressed with pollution caused by runoff from increased development and large coastal populations. |
