Walk This Way
Photograph by Stephen L. Alvarez
Guiding Geographic's caving team and its (usually) gear-laden donkeys across the Selma Plateau, Said al Ghadani (above) his brother, and his 60-year-old father tread very lightly. Whenever they encountered rough or rocky terrain, they would remove their rubber flip-flops and walk barefoot. It would, they explained, save their flip-flops' soles and keep them from twisting an ankle. "To me," says author Greg Crouch, "that's a good definition of dire poverty."
