Frodo: King of the Forest
Photograph by Anup Shah

"People say he is a brute, but from a biological point of view, he is a very successful alpha male with no challengers in sight," says Dr. Anne Pusey, director of the Jane Goodall Institute's Center for Primate Studies at the University of Minnesota. Weighing 121 pounds, Frodo has no equal in size, but he nonetheless breaks up grooming parties among the other males to keep them from forming alliances against him. [For an update on Frodo, see Frodo: The Alpha Male.]
