Sheldon: Gombe's Braveheart?
Photograph by Anup Shah
When a group of male chimpanzees heard the cries of red colobus monkeystheir favorite preyin the trees overhead, the hunt was on. Up to ten males leapt into the branches in pursuit and managed to capture at least four monkeys. Sheldon, 19, emerged with one prize, which he shared with the other chimpanzees. Though a loner from a low-status family, Sheldon often shows a bravery beyond his years and is rising fast through Gombe's complex hierarchy.
