First Contact
Photograph by Michael Nichols
After days of searching, Jane Goodall, right, and conservationist Mike Fay, left, finally caught a glimpse of their quarry: a group of chimpanzees. An estimated 380 chimps live in the Goualougo Triangle, a protected wedge of Congolese forest. Isolated from human contact until 1990, the Goualougo chimps show no real fear of people. Researchers Dave Morgan, background, and Crickette Sanz are trying to document the behavior of these "naive" animals. Fay invited Goodall to visit Goualougo in the hope that she can help him persuade the government of the Republic of the Congo to extend the protected area to the east. There, some 155 additional native chimps live in a forest threatened by logging.
