The Young and the Restless

On the 16th day of our trek, in the southwestern corner of China's Xinjiang Autonomous Region, we reached the chiru's calving grounds—and the calves. Naturally, the newborns were a bit wobbly on their feet, but soon they would be strong enough to begin migrating with their mothers back to their southern range. The Chinese government has shown similar fortitude in cracking down on chiru poaching. Will it now expand the borders of existing reserves to protect this wild nursery?
