Healing Blossoms
Photograph by Jim Brandenburg

Whenever the woods are disturbed—by fire, by logging—sun-loving fireweed rises to fill the void and stabilize the soil. It's a lovely opportunist, its fresh color a balm on destruction. Fire is an integral part of the forest ecosystem, and fireweed's wind-dispersed seeds quickly grow in newly burned areas—nature's way of giving hope for the future.
