A Patchwork Omen
Photograph by Maria Stenzel

Man-made clearings dot the Amazon rain forest near a section of the Transoceanica in Madre de Dios, the least developed region of Peru. Such openings, likely made for cattle pasture, are not yet as common in Peru as they are along Brazil's paved TransAmazonia Highway. Yet many environmentalists fear that such deforestation is a harbinger of things to come.
