Night Lights

Dancing glow sticks accompany the Vineyard Haven Band (founded in 1868 as the Silver Cornet Band)—at a concert held every August in Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard. Families circle the bandstand during the show, and fireworks light Nantucket Sound in a sparkling grand finale. The fireworks are set to begin at the phrase "and the rocket's red glare" of "The Star-Spangled Banner." But "it doesn't always quite work out that way," says the conductor.

Lighting Techniques: On some of the pictures I used a small amount of fill flash to pick out someone in the crowd and make them more prominent.
Special Equipment or Comments: I used a Nikon D1x digital camera to check the exposure and calculate the amount of blur. I made some photographs on the digital camera and used the same exposures on the film camera.
