On the Jutaí River, the boat carrying Possuelo's crew hit bottom, badly bending the propeller, which then had to be removed and hammered back into shape before the team could return to Tabatinga. With his latest reconnaissance trip behind him, Possuelo hopes to persuade his colleagues in the Brazilian government to expand existing rain forest reserves that help protect indigenous tribes—as well as preserve the critical ecosystem they call home.
