Mercy Killing
Photograph by Gideon Mendel

Veterinarian Geoff Lay shoots an anesthetized horse rather than leave it uncared for at a white farm seized by blacks. Lay joined a team from the Zimbabwe National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals that tried unsuccessfully for two hours to load the quarter horse into a trailer. Fast-track land reform led to large-scale abandonment, neglect, and mistreatment of animals as whites fled farms, leaving livestock and pets behind. Thousands of animals have been rescued, and hundreds euthanized.
