Empty Bellies
Photograph by Gideon Mendel
Pupils at Jabula Primary School in the arid, impoverished Hwange District stretch out their hands for a serving of mahewu, a traditional drink of maize meal, soybeans, and sorghum that is high in vitamins and minerals. With drought and the upheaval generated by fast-track land reform, maize production in 2003 is expected to fall 70 percent short of the country's needs, turning what was once the breadbasket of southern Africa into a hungry nation.
