Encounter at Daybreak
Photograph by Anup and Manoj Shah

Muzzles meet in greeting, a zebra ritual especially common between stallions. Odors communicate identity, while rank is signaled in part by ear, mouth, and head gestures. A young male sniffed by a superior may lay his ears back and expose his teeth, both signs of submission.
