Photograph by Michael Nichols
Local researchers, including Modeste Doukaga, above, have spent nearly three years documenting the wildlife that visits Langoué Bai, enduring biting flies, foot worms, and charging elephants. The payoff: $500 a monthand a window on a world few humans have ever seen. So far they've identified 800 different elephants that use the clearing.
