Best Worst Quirkiest
I had a great time photographing a young man named Ranger Hughes. I spent a very pleasant afternoon with him in a community garden where he produces these huge vegetables. He was such a relaxed, friendly, and kind person. It was a pleasure to work with him. I was really hoping the pictures would turn out OK, so I was happy when they ended up on the opening spread of the article.

It was sunny the day I got to Portland. Then it rained the entire week I was there. Forest Park has so many trees that it's dark anyway, but then add to that a cloudy sky. I had a tough time getting pictures.

Writer Kevin Krajick was interviewing a man named Steve Engel, when Steve asked him, "Do you know Maria Stenzel?" Kevin pointed at me and said, "She's right there!"
It turns out that I had met Steve on a National Geographic tour I led in Antarctica. He was a guide and a very nice person. And there he was in Portland. It was so random running into him there.
