Happy Trails
Photograph by Maria Stenzel

Forest Park offers Portlanders more than 80 miles (130 kilometers) of jogging and mountain biking trails. Its 5,000 acres (2,000 hectares) attract elk, bear, and other wildlife from the Coast Range. "Development of Portland has skyrocketed over the past 50 years, and yet there is still this green oasis," says Marcy Houle, author of One City's Wilderness: Portland's Forest Park. "It lends a real beauty and dignity to the whole city."
