Waning Days in the Sun
Photograph by Gordon Wiltsie
With September's snow dusting the peaks surrounding northern Mongolia's Darhad valley, herders are busy fattening their animals for their coming migration to winter pastures. Over the course of a few weeks in October and early November, hundreds of families will move thousands of cattle, sheep, goats, and horses through these 10,000-foot (3,000-meter) mountains.
