Bear With Him
Photograph by Cary Wolinsky
Cuddly but not soft (they're granite, after all), these teddy bears have become a specialty of Barre sculptor Jerry Williams. A client commissions the two-ton-plus creatures and donates them to children's parks around the country. "I'm pretty much a newcomer in Barre," says Williams, who has lived in the area for 23 years. He arrived in his 20s to study as an apprentice sculptor, and just stayed on. Carving hard rock, he says, is hard work. "You have to get the tricks from someone who already knows them. You can't read this stuff in a book. Barre is one of the last places left where you can learn to work in stone."
