Working Mother
Photograph by Steve McCurry

Noor Ahmad, a logistician at the Afghan Ministry of Higher Education, and his wife, Nazia, relax with their children at home. Like many educated women in Kabul, Nazia has resumed a career put on hold during the Taliban regime, which forbid nearly all women from working. Although the current government has outlawed the bullying of women that was sanctioned by the Taliban, professionals like Nazia, an agronomist and lecturer at the Institute of Agriculture, are often accosted in the street when walking without a male family member.
