A Chilly Start
Photograph by Nina Berman

Early one sub-zero morning in downtown Fargo, North Dakota, a trail of car exhaust billows through the darkness past a snow-bound bike. "It seemed so odd to see a bike in weather so cold," said photographer Nina Berman. Bikers in other parts of the country may brake for snow, but in Fargo (which averages 56 inches [140 centimeters] of snow a year) they keep on pedaling with the help of studded tires, face masks, and neoprene booties.
