Battle of the Ages
Photograph by Michael Yamashita

The appetite for samurai-style sword fighting lives on as futuristic Power Rangers confront medieval ninjas, or assassins, in a battle staged at the Toei Uzumasa Eigamura movie-studio theme park in Kyoto. Though the samurai class—highest of four hereditary classes once recognized in Japan—was dissolved in 1876, the Japanese warrior has remained immortal in films, television, comic books, and novels. Rarely is the samurai ever pictured without a sword, symbol of his authority, the most prized of his possessions, and, most important of all, the fiercest weapon on the battlefield.
