Going Places
Photograph by Ira Block

Staff manager Gregg Henderson greets a fellow employee from his bike as he rounds a turn in Plant II. Employees often use bicycles or motorized scooters along marked traffic lanes to save time. Plant II covers 2.3 million square feet (213,700 square meters)—roughly the size of 40 football fields. In its entirety, Boeing's Wichita facility includes 238 buildings and employs 12,500 workers. Wichita's three other commercial and general aviation plane manufacturers, Cessna, Raytheon, and Bombardier Aerospace, count as other large employers in this city of 350,000 where a quarter of the labor force is employed in factories, about twice the national average.
