The Layered Look

This graphic bull's-eye in Mars's Schiaparelli basin offers more evidence of the planet's watery past. The image, made by the Mars Orbiter Camera on Mars Global Surveyor in June 2003, shows a 1.4-mile-wide (2.3-kilometer-wide) crater scored by layers of sedimentary rock, perhaps deposited by an ancient lake.
