Birthday Candles
Photograph by Mattias Klum

Nuns light butter lamps before an altar at Tashi Choeling nunnery, near Hanle monastery, to commemorate Buddha's birth, death, and enlightenment. Normally the nuns can afford to light only a few lamps, but on this day—known as Saga Dawa—they light scores with supplies donated for the celebration by local people.
