Sea Lights
Photograph by Emory Kristof, Kevin Raskoff, and Chris Nicholson
Fireworks from the sea, a two-inch-long (five-centimeter-long) ctenophore comb jelly, Mertensia ovum, gleams as the camera rolls. The coloration results from light refracting off thin flat paddles called ctens. Unlike most jellies, ctenophores lack stinging cells, instead grabbing prey with their long, sticky tentacles. Biologists found an abundance of these tiny wonders thriving in the surface waters of the Canada Basin.
