The Eyes Had It
Photograph by Landon Nordeman

Cataracts, that is. But instead of undergoing surgery, Paul Spence decided to bathe his eyes with radon-laced water from the Merry Widow Mine. He began the regimen in Basin, and continued the treatments with water he took home to Sandy, Oregon. "And his cataracts have disappeared!" marvels Paul's wife, Louise. "His doctor couldn't believe it." Neither do many doctors, who warn that repeated exposure to radon may increase the risk of developing cancer.
