Just Chillin'
Photograph by Norbert Rosing
Cooling off after play fighting with other polar bears in apparent tests of strength, a male rolled under a willow shrub laden with snow. "He used his claws to pull down a branch," says photographer Norbert Rosing. "A load of snow fell on him like he had shaken a Christmas tree." Some 1,200 of these bears (Ursus maritimus) live along the western Hudson Bay near the Canadian town of Churchill, the self-proclaimed Polar Bear Capital of the World.
