Polar Pushovers
Photograph by Norbert Rosing
Two tired males are more bark than bite after a round of playful wrestling. Serious injuries rarely result from such tussles, common among males in autumn. Nearly inactive all summer when little food is available, the bears appear to benefit from the exercise of mock combat when the weather cools. It also allows individuals to assess their strength against others in the group.
