Rocky's Deal
Photograph by David McLain

"I can go anywhere in town and I will see people who can sign and communicate with me," says Rocky Truman, a graduate of the Alabama School for the Deaf who still lives and works in Talladega. This group—clockwise from left, Wesley Moran, Troy Truelove, Michael Devel, Rocky Truman, and Henry Benefield III—meets twice a month to play cards at Rocky's off-campus house. "It's nice to socialize with people who speak the same language," he says.
