A Thorny Situation
Considered extinct by scientists for decades, the thin-spined porcupine was rediscovered during the 1980s in Brazil's Atlantic forest. After centuries of urban growth, less than 7 percent of the original forest remains, providing refuge for hundreds of endemic animal species and thousands of endemic plants.
