As if in a high-end video game, electronics engineer Tim Samaras faces the all-too-real challenges of chasing down a tornado. It's an exercise in stamina—Samaras once drove more than a thousand miles (1,600 kilometers) in a single day—and technology. His customized Dodge van bristles with communications gear for accessing up-to-the-minute weather data, plus a GPS mapping system, above, which allows him to weave along remote roads in pursuit of some of Earth's most powerful twisters.
