A Slimy Business
Photograph by José Azel

An iridescent tangle of sandworms writhes at a bait cellar in Wiscasset, Maine, before shipment to fishermen and retailers across America. "Wiscasset has always been known for the quality of its bloodworms," says Dennis Hill, owner of Harbor Bait Company. During low tide worm diggers pluck their crop from the pea-soupy mudflats along local estuaries. "They got worms other places, but they're nowhere near the size of ours," says Hill.
