A Clean Start
Photograph by Randy Olson
When business is slow, the tempo picks up at Howard's Cleaners, where owner, operator, and rhythm specialist Barry Miles keeps in practice on one of his three drum sets. "I used to play with a band called Xplicitand we were," says Barry. But days after he volunteered to play one gig with a gospel group called Redeemed, Xplicit suddenly expired. Redeemed remains alive, as does Barry's appreciation of the quality and depth of the local music scene. Nashville and Whitesburg both boast a wealth of talented musicians, says Barry, but only one place has really struck it rich.
