Where Tacky Rules
Photograph by Randy Olson
Want to enter the 19th annual Pine Mountain Tacky Lawn Ornament and Pink Flamingo Soiree? Here are the guidelines: First, bring a lawn ornament, preferably homemade; second, if you enter a store-bought ornament, it should cost less than a T-shirt; and third, no stolen lawn ornaments allowed. "We've gotten flamingos in all shapes, bowling balls, homemade lanterns made of squashed coffee cans," says Jim Webb, the soiree's mastermind who hosts the gala at his home on the shore of what he calls Walled-In Pond. "My goal was to have the tackiest yard in Letcher County," he says, "and I have achieved that dubious distinction."
