Lasting Grief
Photograph by Matt Moyer, WorldPictureNews
A religious pilgrim kisses the door of the Imam Ali shrine in Najaf. "The door is worn down in places because of the kissing," says photographer Matt Moyer. Visits to the shrinesite of Ali's tombprovoke intense emotions, particularly during the fasting month of Ramadan when believers often observe the anniversary of Ali's death in A.D. 661. "People beat their chests, slap their faces, and fall down weeping, overcome with grief," says Moyer.
