Resplendent in orange, a flytrap anemone waits in surrounding gloom for a meal to swim into its open maw. The anemone—this example living about a mile beneath the ocean's surface—is one of many deep-sea species that thrive on Davidson Seamount, a huge underwater volcano 75 miles (120 kilometers) from the coastal city of Monterey, California.
