A mechanical metamorphosis turns a lowly VW into a big attraction at the 16th Annual Summer 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. More than 3,000 custom vehicles came to show-and-shine or to race, attracting some 56,000 spectators. "Americans have always had a love affair with automobiles," says organizer Doc Riley. Owners of customized cars and trucks express their devotion by spending 27 billion dollars a year on additional parts.
