Backyard Farm
Photograph by Jacqueline Mia Foster
Michelle Rosa, 14, shows a neighbor peas growing in the vegetable garden that reaches from fence to fence behind her family's house. On Cape Verde, Michelle's aunt, who owns the house, raised corn and other crops. In Pawtucket, she wants to recreate that world for the younger generation born in the United States. "We used to carry things on our head," she says. "And there was no ovenwe had to get wood for the fire. I want them to know what it is to plant, to farm."
