Interstate 95 cuts through Pawtucket's 02860, bisecting one of the fastest-growing Cape Verdean communities in the United States. For centuries drought and poverty have forced Cape Verdeans to leave their homeland, a ten-island archipelago off the coast of West Africa. In the 1960s, drawn by the old mill town's factory jobs and affordable housing, they started settling in Pawtucket.
