Extended Family
Photograph by Jacqueline Mia Foster
Deborah Duarte (center, in braids) relaxes on her aunt's stoop surrounded by family. Once the first Cape Verdeans settled in Pawtucket, family ties brought many more. They came from the islands and from elsewhere in southern New England, where Cape Verdean immigrants arrived more than a century ago to crew whaling ships out of New Bedford and labor in cranberry bogs on Cape Cod.
