Nature as Sculptor
Photograph by Melissa Farlow
Do you see a giant rabbit? A four-fingered hand thrusting up from the forest floor? "I call it the Rorschach tree," says photographer Melissa Farlow, who came across this stunted, moss-drenched form on Sams River Loop Trail in Olympic National Park. Such natural works in wood abound in the park's temperate rain forests. Covering more than 900,000 acres (360,000 hectares), Olympic's diverse terrain ranges from glacial mountain peaks to subalpine forest to rain forest to a rugged coastline edging the Pacific Ocean.
